  • My neighbor wants me to pay half of a fence that matches her yard

A few days ago a windstorm came through and knocked out one of the fence panels between our yards.
  • At 9AM my neighbor sends me a text and demands I send my husband out so they can talk about the fence RIGHT
    via aphroditeprincess
  • I have pathological demand avoidance, so let's just say this was not a great start. I tell them I'll send him out when he's free.
    via aphroditeprincess
  • He goes out and places some pallets up against it to hold it up, then asks if he should drill them in.
    via aphroditeprincess
  • I tell him to go tell the neighbors first and just to make sure all the reinforcements stay on our side.
    via aphroditeprincess
  • I'm working from home, so I'm busy on and off calls. She texts me that we need to have a conversation about it.

  • The posts are rotting and she says the braces aren't working. I can literally see the fence from where I sit and he's drilling wood into it. as we speak while they do...
    via aphroditeprincess
  • nothing... but I see them back there talking to him. She then texts me they were about to go on a trip and that her husband is going to stay home now to repair it.

  • "With your husband's help they can get it done." Apparently his labor is being volunteered for this now.
    via aphroditeprincess
  • For context: my husband doesn't own the house. He's an immigrant and we are waiting on his green card.
    via aphroditeprincess
  • I own the house. Which is necessary info for the upcoming fun. So, they're outside talking while my husband drills the pallets to the fence to stabilize it.

  • Smiling woman talking with an older neighbor over a backyard fence on a sunny day in a residential neighborhood.
  • She tells me to come and I text I'm in meetings and can talk after 4pm.
    via aphroditeprincess
  • I add that I don't have the budget for it this month but that we can revisit the conversation on 1-2 months and that husband is stabilizing it for a temporary solution until we can replace it.
    via aphroditeprincess
  • This is not sufficient, apparently. He comes in and between calls he tells me they're adamant about us
    via aphroditeprincess
  • Their reasons are because she just lost her job, they just had to replace the water heater, and their AC unit.
    via aphroditeprincess
  • Guess what? Our houses are the same age. We just replaced those things too and I've been on a single income for 6 years.
    via aphroditeprincess
  • My sympathy for this? Zero. But these are her excuses and then she says they are just afraid that with the fence broken my dog could get in and attack her dogs, or her kids.
    via aphroditeprincess
  • So let's back up: a couple years ago, her child kicked a ball into our yard.
    via aphroditeprincess
  • He jumped the fence to retrieve it. My dog bit her kid. So, okay. There's history here.
    via aphroditeprincess
  • Then she adds, "I heard he bit other kids in the neighborhood too." And I know what she means, ok.
    via aphroditeprincess
  • He did. My daughter's friend. He was in the kennel, her friend opened the kennel, crawled in, and yanked him by the fur.
    via aphroditeprincess
  • And he bit her. While I was in the bathroom. I offered to pay the bill, they said no, the insurance covered it.
    via aphroditeprincess
  • I sincerely felt sorry for the little girl but also... don't pull on a dog in their own home.
    via aphroditeprincess
  • And of course, I forgot to mention his breed. He's a chiweenie. Yes. The terrible menace of the neighborhood weighs 10 lbs and he's smaller than a cat.
    via aphroditeprincess
  • He's a terrifying villain. So, obviously, fence situation is an emergency to protect against him. They're adamant we pay half because they simply cannot afford to front the whole cost.
    via aphroditeprincess
  • Fine, yes, I understand. Shared fence, shared responsibility. So that's why I said we could revisit next month so I could budget the funds.
    via aphroditeprincess
  • I guess she leaves for the vacation and the husband stays home and she tells me to talk to him when I'm done working.
    via aphroditeprincess
  • I repeat we can visit the conversation again in a month and that is stabilized for now.
    via aphroditeprincess
  • With the drill and the pallets, it's not going anywhere. Then she tells me they went ahead and ordered the posts.
    via aphroditeprincess
  • So now I'm like... wait, what? I tell her I'm a little caught off guard by that and that we hadn't agreed on a price or materials yet.
    via aphroditeprincess
  • So she texts back blaming spotty service (over... text... lol) and that she DIDN'T order the fence posts and that they were out of stock at Home Depot and won't have them until Monday.
    via aphroditeprincess
  • And in my head I'm like... yeah... okay then. And she then says they want the fence to match the fence at the back of their yard.
    via aphroditeprincess
  • Which is not my preferred color, but I figure color might not matter, I can just paint my side of it.
    via aphroditeprincess
  • But I know for sure whatever she used... looks expensive. Now back up again. My other neighbors two months ago knocked on our door.
    via aphroditeprincess
  • They've been doing home updates for months. They said "we bought a fence and we are going to replace the one between our fences.
    via aphroditeprincess
  • I got the costs, don't worry about it." So we said OK. Because if I'm not paying for the fence, I really don't care what material it is.
    via aphroditeprincess
  • Aside from that, what they picked ended up being my preferred style and color anyway. Zero complaints here.
    via aphroditeprincess
  • They replaced the fence. It's lovely. You can have whatever you want if you're paying for it.
    via aphroditeprincess
  • So now back to first neighbors. They want to know how much we paid for that other fence
    via aphroditeprincess
  • We say nothing. They covered it. Which shuts down what I know their next argument was going to be about how we can't budget for one neighbor and not the other.
    via aphroditeprincess
  • So now she reiterates she wants the fence to match her back fence. I say we can sit down and look at materials an options together next month.
    via aphroditeprincess
  • She does not relent. She asks what materials I'll prefer, that she doesn't want flimsy vinyl but she consider wood but she really really wants a composite fence to match their other one.
    via aphroditeprincess
  • Do you know how much I knew about composite fences before this? Nothing. I have done O fence research prior to this week.
    via aphroditeprincess
  • DO YOU KNOW HOW MUCH A COMPOSITE FENCE COSTS!? 7. Times. The. Price. There's 10 panels to replace between our yards.
    via aphroditeprincess
  • So. $600ish if it's a wood fence. $700- 900 of its vinyl. Her exact fence on the home depot website?
    via aphroditeprincess
  • $5000. So now I'm like... ok. I see what's up. They want me to pony up $2500 for a fence that matches their yard in a material they've already chosen and decided on.
    via aphroditeprincess
  • Tone. Deaf. Lady. If you just lost your job and you're still considering the $5000 fence, we are not living in the same universe.
    via aphroditeprincess
  • I am over here trying to budget for half of a $900 fence plus labor. She's over there plotting a huge cement and composite fence plan and figuring out how to not make it cost $5000.
    via aphroditeprincess
  • She asked if I had bids or a fence guy already in mind. "Oh yeah. Let me just call my fence guy.
    via aphroditeprincess
  • He's on speed dial." Just kidding, obviously I didn't say that. I tell her I don't have bids because it wasn't on my radar until today, and that I would prefer a wood or vinyl fence for a more budget friendly option and repeated we could discuss it next month.
    via aphroditeprincess
  • She hasn't replied since. I wonder if she already ordered the fence and thought she could just hand me the bill and be like, "Here, pay half." But it's not over yet.
    via aphroditeprincess
  • I'm predicting more fun in the near future. Thanks for coming to my neighbor rant..
